As many of my friends prepare themselves for screenings of the new Bond film this weekend (whereas I, sadly, sit at home and wish I had been wise enough to book tickets early enough), I felt that a quick post summing up Skyfall and its variant clothes wouldn’t go amiss … after all, we’re all dying to know about the fashion, right?
Skyfall came to London this week for the world premiere – the Albert Hall was flooded with the glamourous and the fabulous as all eyes turned on the latest Bond film. Marking the 50 year anniversary, Daniel Craig returns as Bond for the third time – with one successful trip (Casino Royale) as the spy, and one not-so successful (Quantum of Solace), it was rather bated breath at the premiere to see if this Bond, directed by Sam Mendes, could make it.
The man himself, wearing Tom Ford, graced the red carpet, whilst Bérénice Marlohe and Naomie Harris, Bond girls each, mingled with the likes of Naomi Campbell, Penélope Cruz, Bond villain Javier Bardem (in an ethically produced Gucci as part of the Green Carpet Challenge), and even the Duchess of Cornwall.
Of course, it’s not only the red carpet fashion to intrigue … costume designer Janey Temime, charged with dressing the Skyfall Bond girls, opened up to Vogue about the whole thing, in particular the rather spectacular black backless gown worn by Bérénice Marlohe that has featured on the film posters. “The dress features 60,000 crystals all applied by hand – it took six months to create. I was at breaking point,” she admits; the gown – complete with sheer panels and a tattoo-style print – is covered in thousands of Swarovski crystals, and makes its appearance in a casino scene. Apparently, Marlohe had to be sewn in to the dress!

I have to admit – these Bond girls have to be my favourite when it comes to the fashions (apart from Eva Green in that showstopping gown). From Bérénice Marlohe’s sensuality and effortless chic to Naomie Harris’ strength and glamour, you get the sense that these are two very different Bond girls.
