Christopher Kane at London Fashion Week SS’13

It was an unusual source of inspiration at Christopher Kane for SS’13… Frankenstein by Mary Shelley provided a strange backdrop to the collection, appearing in nuts-and-bolts fastenings on dresses, and adding a darker edge to the designs.

A far cry from the dark hues of last season, Christopher Kane concentrated on simpler tones – white and pink and yellow, with only the briefest nod to black – and instead preferred to use textures to convey the beauty of the designs. The genius of Christopher Kane is to take something mundane and add a twist that is such a step away from the norm that it creates statement pieces with wow factor, yet are wearable for all mere mortals. This season, it was to create dresses from a jelly-like fabric, in thick ruched to create a strange sci-fi outfit in shining pinks and yellows.

Embellishment, apart from the Frankenstein-esque fastenings, were bows and ruches and frills, lace appliqué, and quilted jackets… even black masking tape! Prints were kept to a minimum – but flashes of eye-aching brights appeared with Frankenstein’s face and paint splashes.

When the front row attracts the likes of Alexa Chung, Samantha Cameron and Anna Wintour, you know this is a designer to pay attention to… nuts and bolts anyone?
