Nicole Farhi at London Fashion Week SS’13

Ex-Aquascutum designer Joanne Sykes hasn’t yet started in her new role as Nicole Farhi’s creative director, but that hasn’t stopped the brand delivering with the usual Nicole Farhi oomph.

Vogue‘s Calgary Avansino said: “It’s that elegant French woman who has an ease in dressing, she’s the epitome of summer.” Meanwhile, it was pleats, pleats and more pleats – on everything from trench coats to drop-waist dresses. Colours were soft and summery; white, stone, warm beige and indigo threaded throughout the catwalk.

Inspiration came from Edward Burtynsky’s photography and the marble quarries in Tuscany – the latter in the marbled blouses and the skirts of day dresses. Embellishment came in the form of sequins – trickled down dresses in the style of a rock fall.

A fond farewell of the last administration, and a certain amount of anticipation for the new. Beautiful and simple this season – but one can’t help but ask: what will Joanne Sykes bring next time?
