I can’t even wait to get to my New York Fashion Week favourite of Day Four! (Though do check out Derek Lam, DKNY, Thakoon, Diane Von Furstenberg and Y-3). No, today’s favourite is Victoria Beckham. The excitement was aided by the tantalising pictures the woman herself posted on Twitter. Her show notes explained her intention to move on from her signature bodycon dresses, without losing the ideals of the brand. For her SS’13 collection, rather than remaining structural, Mrs Beckham used looser fabrics, letting go of her previously strict contours.
The opening was black maxi dresses (inspired by lingerie), button-downs with long skirts (with floppy hats courtesy of Stephen Jones), followed by tiered minis, pleats and orange, and masculine shirts. As Vogue explains, “Beckham’s strength is still her ability to edit and reduce, eschewing the grandiose and preferring to offer striking yet simple propositions.”
Manolo Blahnik shoes offset a tangerine day dress, latticed dress shirts, black trousers and blouses with contrast collars. But it wasn’t just the aesthetic that Victoria Beckham wanted to express – in her show notes she explained that she wanted to explore “the notion of how a woman can emotionally connect with her clothes and how they make her feel”. I completely agree. And that’s why Victoria Beckham is my pick of Day Four.
